Kitchen Therapy Week: Fantasy Kitchen Rescue!

The bat signal went out late last night. A friend’s serious S.M.S. (save my sanity) went like this: “Nooooo!! My off-site project (@#!&) is keeping me here for 5 more days! I want to be in my kitchen. I want to come home!” The woman wasn’t coming home, not yet. We have a situation and it’s serious. An inspirational boost is on its way. We’ve talked about her dream kitchen for years. Over the next 5 days, we’ll bring her dream kitchen to life while delving into the world of fantasy kitchens. These segments are officially dedicated to the corporate impaired, travel impounded, windowless conference room detainees. “Sandy” (name changed to protect the beleaguered); here’s some kitchen inspiration, Chicago style.

Our first stop? The Merchandise Mart. You want to see an amazing array of kitchen showrooms? Walk through the first floor. And yes, you’re allowed. It’s open to the public. “Sandy’s” choice? That was made ages ago. Snaidaro’s cabinets are stunning and crafted with unbelievable attention to detail. I stated once before that we don’t really need Maserati‘s in our kitchens. Need? Want? Need? Want? It’s a tough call. But tough times call for action. The Maserati line of kitchen cabinets? Consider it done.

Snaidaro’s Ola line is “Sandy’s” perfect kitchen makeover daydream. 35 different lacquer color choices, soft curves and interior drawer details all help ease any decision dilemmas. Delivery, contractors and installation, through the magic of blogging, all happened instantaneously. The job is perfect; it’s on time AND below budget. We know how to daydream about kitchens! Now for the personal details.

Find interesting accessories and specialty products. That’s our to do list. Actually, all kitchens’ benefit from these special touches. Lucky for us, Chicago’s perfectly suited for our shopping needs. We head directly to Fox & Obel. They have a good oil and vinegar collection. We need a beautiful bottle to grace these special countertops. It’s also a good place to grab lunch. We select a beautiful bottle of Leonardi Saba balsamic vinegar. This is a beautiful balsamic and I love that peacocks guard the farm where it’s made. Not sure how olives and carmels with sea salt ended up in our bag. It’s just that kind of day. At least it’s how I imagine it!

“Sandy’s” actually planning on cooking in her new kitchen. After-Words New & Used Books is our next stop. It’s a great used book store and their cook book selection had items of interest. This was unexpected – we found a great photo for our signature piece in the new kitchen. This is a local Chicago photographer who the store owner is looking to reconnect with. More details later. This quick stop absolutely exceeded our expectations. And that’s how I know we’re working in the right direction. There’s a great flow to the day. Sunshine, good food, great finds and time well spent. One more stop.

The French Market beckons! Fresh baguette, from Pastoral,  will work perfectly with our first dinner in the new kitchen. Kitchen design, food and sharing it with friends. That’s about as good as it gets. Sending more kitchen therapy, Chicago style, your way all week. Getting some friends to help along the way. We’ll make this a fun week. “Sandy”, I hope this helps!
